Trimble County Varsity Raiders Clings to Victory as Shawe Memorial Varsity Hilltoppers Nearly Erases 5-Run Deficit

Trimble County Varsity Raiders built a five-run lead in the fourth inning and then held off Shawe Memorial Varsity Hilltoppers's charge for a 9-8 victory on Saturday. Shawe Memorial Varsity Hilltoppers scored five runs in the failed comeback. Philip Kahn, Wyatt Nichter, Tyler Hill, and Nichter came through with RBIs to lead the rally. Both offenses were strong at the plate as Trimble County Varsity Raiders collected nine hits and Shawe Memorial Varsity Hilltoppers four in the high-scoring affair Trimble County Varsity Raiders opened up scoring in the second inning, when Masen O'Neal tripled on a 2-0 count, scoring one run. After Shawe Memorial Varsity Hilltoppers scored one run in the top of the third, Trimble County Varsity Raiders answered with one of their own. Trimble County Varsity Raiders then answered when Dylan Penick lined out, driving in a run. Trimble County Varsity Raiders pulled away for good with five runs in the fourth inning. In the fourth an error scored one run for Trimble County Varsity Raiders, Penick doubled on a 1-0 count, scoring two runs, and O'Neal singled on a 3-2 count, scoring two runs. Shawe Memorial Varsity Hilltoppers scored four runs in the fifth inning. Kahn, Nichter, and Hill all drove in runs in the frame. Charlie Liter was on the pitcher's mound for Trimble County Varsity Raiders. Liter surrendered seven runs on four hits over five innings, striking out six. Kahn started the game for Shawe Memorial Varsity Hilltoppers. Kahn lasted four innings, allowing eight hits and eight runs while striking out six and walking one. Jacob Hertz threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen. Trimble County Varsity Raiders saw the ball well today, racking up nine hits in the game. O'Neal and Penick all managed multiple hits for Trimble County Varsity Raiders. O'Neal led Trimble County Varsity Raiders with three hits in four at bats. Sam Fewell went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Shawe Memorial Varsity Hilltoppers in hits. Shawe Memorial Varsity Hilltoppers tore up the base paths, as two players stole at least two bases. Hill led the way with two.
